These year UKirk, the Presbyterian Church (USA) national collegiate ministry group has published a four year lectionary for the academic year. A lectionary is a deliberately chosen set of readings that when regularly read will take the reader through a significant portion of scripture. This year the New Testament readings will be from the Gospel of John. The Old Testament readings will follow the history of Israel. Each week there will also be a reading from the Psalms which was Israel’s hymn book and is the church’s prayer book.
As you read each week you may want to ask yourself these questions:
What does this passage tell us about God?
What does this passage tell us about the relationship between God and humankind?
What did this passage mean for its original audience?
What might this passage mean for us today?
For some introductory materials to the texts you may wish to visit Westminster Reads. There you will find, in addition to an introduction and outline of each book, some brief chapter by chapter comments.
